GENERAL
INFORMATION ON DOORS
DOOR
STYLES
If you
wish to have open bulkhead doors you will first need to cut
out the original closed doorway. Drill out most of the door
and then clean up the edges with a file or hobby knife.
Next
fashion doors out of sheet plastic equal to the size of the
openings. All of the doors swing to the bow so glue one edge
of the sheet plastic to the forward edge of the opening. The
angle of the door is up to you.

DOORS
TO BE MODIFIED
Listed
below are the two doors on the 1/350 Academy Minicraft model
that require modification.
#3 Funnel
Deckhouse.
The door/enclosed
stairwell on the stern side of the #3 funnel deckhouse
is wrong. This was not rectangular as seen in the kit
but rather should be shaped like a quarter of a circle.
In other words the door should face to starboard and the
port facing side should be curved down to the deck level.
Sand this rectangular
protrusion down slightly to allow room for the addition
of Vent
38.
See the still
of the ship breaking in two in the Cameron Titanic book,
or movie stills.
|
There is an
alternative version of this area suggested by Bob Read.
That there
was either a solid bulkhead around the stairwell similar
to those at the forward end of the boat deck or a railing.
Over the top of this was placed a curved canvas cover
during inclement weather.
The solid sided
bulkhead is represented below.

The aft door
and the deck lamp have to swap positions.
|
#4 Funnel
Deckhouse
The second
last door on the starboard side of #4 funnel deckhouse
needs to have a louvered grill placed in it near the top.
Manufacture
this by cutting the rails out of a discarded A/M 5-bar
railing panel and then trim it down with a sharp hobby
knife so only 3 rails were left at about 1mm long. Glue
this to the door to simulate the louver.
We painted
ours white.

DOORS
TO BE ADDED
Listed
below are 35 doors that need to be added or altered on the 1/350
Academy Minicraft model. This list can also be used for other
scales.
For
ease of identification and location of each door we will start
at the bow and move towards the stern of the ship .

FORWARD
WELL DECK
Doors
1 & 2
If
you look at the model's forward well deck you will see
two pairs of doors on the aft of the forecastle. One
pair on either side of the #2 hatch.
You
need to add three to these walls.
Add
a door on each of the bulkheads that turn foreword under
the forecastle on either side of the # 2 hatch.
This
is a single door in the style of the paired doors mentioned
above. Fabricate these out of sheet plastic and paint
them to match the well deck colors, white on the upper
half and primer red/brown on the bottom half.
|
Door
3
The
third door leads to the Lamp Room and is located to
the port side of the port pair of double doors. The
opening can be seen in the photos of the sunken Titanic's
well deck area. The Lamp Room door sat on the wall between
the port bollard and port side door pair and appears
to be full length.
Again,
just use a small rectangle of sheet plastic to fabricate.
Glue the door just starboard of the port bollard and
underneath the pipe that runs along the top of the bulkhead
to port .
If
you are going to add this pipe (see the
PIPES section) do so -before- adding the Lamp Room
door so you do not block the door.
Paint
the door white on the upper half and primer red/brown
on the lower half to match the well deck.

B
deck (Under Bridge)
Doors
4 and 5
On
the lower part of J39 is the forward bulkhead of B deck,
this contains six windows and two port holes. The portholes
were in fact doors.
Used
a hobby knife and a straight edge to scribe a door shape
around each porthole. Check Ballard's `Exploring the
Titanic' page 44 for a visual of the doors.
Another
method is to make them out of sheet plastic and glue
them into place but don't forget to re-drill out the
portholes. We found scribing the easiest method.

B
DECK FORWARD OPEN PROMENADE (under Wing Cabs)
Doors
6 & 7
Two
small half height doors need to be added to the either
side of the HULL as follows:
Located
between the posts holding up the floor of A deck. They
sit above the 3rd and 4th porthole of C deck aft of
the forward well deck. The tops of these doors included
the wood hand railings. See Exploring the Titanic, page
44 for a visual reference.
Fabricate
from sheet plastic and paint white with brown tops.

A-DECK
FORWARD OPEN PROMENADE
These
are directly under the crew stairwells on the boat deck.
Doors
8 & 9
A
single door is located in the center of the enclosed
crew stairwell (port and starboard) leading down from
the boat deck. We placed ours so it was visible from
the side between the 2nd and 3rd post on A-deck underneath
the Wing Cabs.
Fabricate
from sheet plastic and paint white.
- Note
- It is not 100% certain at the time of this writing
if the crew stairwell doors were there or if the enclosure
just had open doorways. Bruce Beveridge comments:
"...that the plans call for a door and there is some
pictures which possibly show a door (without a port
hole) but the modeler should leave it off since in
every picture of T where this entrance is seen, the
door is either left open or removed. The door can
not be seen." Modeler's choice
|
|
Doors
10 &11
These
doors are to be added to the partitions you made for
the forward end of the A deck promenade in the BULKHEADS
section.
Once
you have made the partition and bent it to the angle
required, fabricate two doors out of sheet plastic and
glue to the flat areas next to the notched out windows
you made.

BOAT DECK - GRAND STAIRCASE AFT (portside)
Door
12
Part J 29 needs to be rebuilt before you can add the
door. See BULKHEAD section.
Cut
out a single door from sheet plastic, drill out a port
hole in the top 1/3 of the door and glue this to the
port side of the windows. The door is not full length
but was raised up from the deck level slightly.
See
WINDOWS section for description
of the windows.

HULL
DOORS (starboard)
Doors
13, 14 & 15
These
are located along B deck towards the aft end of the
A deck private promenade windows and bow end of the
1st class B deck entrance. The style of door can be
seen on the model's hull immediately in front of the
Cafe Parisien. There are three doors located here and
placed as follows: C

HULL
DOORS (port)
Doors
16 & 17
These
are located along B deck on the bow end of the 1st class
B deck entrance. It does -not- have the 3rd door aft
of the private promenade as seen on the starboard side,
just the two at the 1st class entrance.
Cut
from sheet plastic, glue and paint white.

BOAT
DECK #3 FUNNEL DECKHOUSE
Doors
18 & 19
Port
and starboard of the deckhouse there is a 'cubicle'.
A sliding door needs to be added to the out board bulkhead
of each 'cubicle', these doors lead to stairs down to
A deck.
Open:
Cut sheet plastic to represent the width of two doors.
Paint the forward section black to represent an open
door.
Closed:
Cut sheet plastic to represent one door and
clue to forward corner of bulkhead. To represent the
runner cut pulled sprue to twice the length of the door.
Glue sprue flush to bottom and top of door starting
at the forward edge of the door.
Aft
of the portside's sliding door add a deck lamp and small
hand rail. Seen here on the Olympic.
|
Door
20
Add
a door to the aft bulkhead of the port 'cubicle' near
the corner (this was known as the chair room on the
Olympic). It should face the cowl vent that sits in
front of the aft expansion joint. It is a single door.
Paint
all doors white.

|
A-DECK
PROMENADE FROM WEATHER PARTITION TO PALM COURT
Doors
21 (forward alcove port).
Add
a door on the aft port bulkhead of the forward Grand
Staircase on the port corner. This wall should look
like the one immediately above on the Boat deck we
altered in the steps for Door #12.
Drill
a porthole in the center top 1/3 of each of the door.
Two
windows also need to be added. See WINDOWS
section for description of the windows.
|
Door
22 (forward alcove starboard)
Add
a door on the aft starboard bulkhead of the forward
Grand Staircase. No windows need to be added. See
the Wels deck plan in `Legacy' or Browne's in O'Donnell's
`Last Days Of The Titanic'.
Drill
a porthole in the center top 1/3 of each of the door.
|
Doors
23 & 24 (aft alcove)
These
were the doors to the cloak rooms.
Add
a door to the forward bulkhead of the alcove on the
outboard corner. Inboard of these doors was a staircase
(one each side) that was inset and open faced leading
up to the boat deck #3 funnel deckhouse (see Doors
18 & 19). You can indicate this with a black
opening or removal of the wall and rebuilding with
sheet plastic.
Drill
portholes in the center top 1/3 of each of each door.
If
you have followed our suggestions for altering the
walls in this area (as the model's on the 1/350 Acad/Mini
are wrong), you will need to remove the door on the
starboard side equal to the room that housed Father
Browne. If you made the change then this would be
the door on the starboard side immediately under the
aft Staircase dome structure on the Boat Deck above.
See the BULKHEAD segment.

A-DECK
AFT BY PALM COURT
Door
25 & 26
On
the walls facing port and starboard aft of the Palm
Court sliding doors were single doors with a porthole.
Fashion from sheet plastic.
Paint
the doors white.

|
|
|
BOAT
DECK TANK ROOM
Door 27
Add
a door to the starboard aft side of the Tank Room between
the two forward windows. You will also fill a window
here (See WINDOW section).
Cut door out from sheet plastic and glue into position
on the bulkhead.
Add
a mat below it. (See MATS
section)
|
|
|
BOAT DECK 2ND CLASS ENTRANCE ELEVATOR
ROOM
Door 28
On top of
the 2nd class entrance's deckhouse sat another structure
for the elevator machinery. Add another door to the
bow wall facing funnel #4. The model provides a door
on the stern side of this structure.
Also add
a ladder to the bulkhead on the starboard side of this
door. See LADDERS section.
|
|
|
B DECK CAFE PARISIEN
Doors
29 & 30
This
is an interior detail.
Add
a pair of swinging portholed doors to the bulkhead just
past the curved bay window Cafe Parisien as seen on
page 52 of Leo Marriott's "Titanic". Note that these
portholes were larger than the standard portholes. Construct
these from sheet plastic and glued them into place after
drilling out the portholes (or you can paint black dots
if you do not wish to drill them).
On
the stern wall was a door that led to the open B deck
aft promenade probably used by the crew only. Cut one
from sheet plastic and glue it to the promenade side
of the partition where it will be seen.

|
|
C
DECK FORWARD OF #5 HATCH
Doors
31 & 32
On
the forward end of the aft well deck there is a bulkhead
that housed the 2nd class staircase. This bulkhead angles
back on either side to pass behind the cranes. Add a
watertight door to both angled sections about 1/3 of
the way from the aft corner.
Doors
are white on upper half, primer red/brown on bottom
half.
|
|
|
C DECK (UNDER POOP DECK)
Doors
34 & 35
Behind the
#6 hatch is the third class entrance. The bulkheads
turn aft shortly outboard of the edges of #6 hatch.
A door needs to be added approx. half way down the bulkhead
and behind the two vents that must be added under the
stairs to the Poop deck. See VENTS
section.
Fashion these
from sheet plastic and glue them to the bulkheads.
Paint the
top half white and the bottom half primer red/brown.

POOP
DECK
Door 35
Add a door
to the port side of the support underneath the docking
bridge's stairs for use by the crew. See DOCKING
BRIDGE section.

ADDITIONAL
DOORS
There are few extra
doors that you can add on the Forecastle and aft Well deck (under
the Poop deck). These are in places that are difficult to see
into so it's up to you if you decide to add them or not.
FORWARD
WELL DECK
Doors 36
& 37.
There
were two doors in each of the forward alcoves on either
side of the number two hatch. These will be difficult
to see but you might catch a glimpse of them. Modeler's
choice.
|
|
|
POOP
DECK
Door 38.
Add a door
to the starboard bulkhead of the bar like the ones on
either side of the #6 cargo hatch. See diagram for doors
35 and 36 above for location.
